Softening or filtration?
They solve different problems. Many homes need one, some neither, a few both. Here is how to tell them apart.

Ion-exchange softening
- Problem: scale from hard water
- Whole-house, at the incoming supply
- Removes hardness minerals; adds sodium or potassium
- Not a purifier
Anti-scale conditioning
- Problem: scale behaviour
- Minerals remain in the water
- Hardness readings unchanged
- Performance varies by device
Drinking-water filtration / RO
- Problem: taste or specific substances at the tap
- Usually one point of use
- Needs cartridge or membrane changes
- Performance depends on the documented equipment
Common misunderstandings
A softener does not make water healthier or purer. A TDS reading is not a safety certificate. Water along the coast is not uniformly unsafe, nor uniformly the same. And a new system does not remove scale that has already built up; existing deposits may need cleaning.
